Solar eclipses are relatively rare. On October 14, 2023, portions of western North America will experience an annular solar eclipse when the Moon, at its farthest distance from Earth (apogee), passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon partially blocks the Sun resulting in a Ring of Fire eclipse.

To see the Ring of Fire, you must be in a location where the Moon casts its antumbra shadow - typically a path about 93 miles wide. To view an eclipse safely you must wear eclipse glasses the entire time - you cannot remove your eye protection without risking blindness.
